Y St. grows with new VA Beach Y St-ers

So what I did last week was something I have been waiting to do for a while now, and I mean a very long while. Somehow I just always seemed to have the worst timing and could not make it to these meetings.  However, last wednesday was different. I finally got to go to a Y St. training.

At my school there are about six or seven people who are in Y St, and until recently I was not among them.  I would not have minded waiting except for the fact that pretty much everyone one of those kids was my friend.  It seemed like they were constantly doing one project or another, and I was determined to join them.  I have always been against smoking, so there was really no reason not to join.  In the meantime I was working with my friend, who eventually became my boy friend, on his projects.  It seemed like a fair deal, but I still wanted to do projects on my own.

Now I was given the opportunity to do so, and boy was I excited. There was a small group of us at the training and Kyle did a great job at keeping us captivated.  Personally I really enjoyed the PowerPoint design; unlike the thousands of ones we have to do at school, this one actually had some pizzazz to it.  After seeing the same orange and blue backgrounds year after year, it was nice to see a diversity of colors and designs.  The information was powerful, and we were asked questions that kept us involved.

I remember thinking that four hours was going to take forever, and I could not imagine what they would do for all of that time.  However, everything that was covered was important and entertaining- from the powerful statistics to the points system.  I think most people in my group were excited about the points you could earn, but who is not excited about the possibility of receiving free things for doing the right thing?  I know I am! Leaving that meeting I knew that I truly did have the chance to make a difference. Even though I was a little afraid at first of going to a training where I did not know anyone, I made some new friends and got a lot of ideas of how to make a difference.  The meeting itself was stellar, and I would do it again.  It’s almost a shame I do not get the chance to.
