Hello! My name is Roger and I am a rising junior attending Granby High School. This is my first year being on the Y Street team and the Y Street Leadership Team (YSLT). Being a part of Y Street has taught me more than I anticipated, and joining YSLT is a decision that I will never regret. I personally enjoyed the virtual YSLT Summit held in July.

Being a YSLT member is definitely nerve-racking. I was afraid that I would mess up or that I wouldn’t be good enough for the role, but my team members and the Y Street staff have been a tremendous help. I have many fond memories of the Summit; one of them is meeting my ‘ZOOMmate’ Max. It was very refreshing meeting someone new and getting to know them. The Summit also offered various activities that we could participate in, such as a Virtual Escape Room, and I enjoyed building a repository for our future goals in Y Street!  Overall, it was a great learning experience and bonding moment to meet new YSLT members.

This Summit experience has given me a lot to ponder. I was able to collaborate with team members and learn new methods to be more productive. It has taught me how to be a better leader, a better advocate, and a better communicator. I look forward to starting the school year with my YSLT members!

Hi! My name is Inina, and I am a junior at Tabb High School. This year will be my third year in Y Street and my first year on the Y Street Leadership Team (YSLT).

In preparation for the upcoming school year, other members and I attended the Y Street Summer Summit. Due to the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Summit was virtual. We had four sessions throughout the whole month of July, each with a theme. For one session, we focused entirely on networking where we got the opportunity to meet key decision-makers and community partners and talk to them about what we do in Y Street and aim to improve in our community. In each session, we did tons of fun icebreaker activities. We also had surprise activities like a Virtual Escape Room and other mystery games.

The Summit strengthened many skills of mine. These skills include public speaking and getting clear communication through to other members of the team. I have learned how to create powerful testimonies and strong- visual media about the importance of Y Street and our campaigns, Rev Your Bev and Share The Air.  What I look forward to most this year is working with the YSLT members at my high school. I also look forward to working with key decision-makers on building healthier communities. All thanks to the Y Street staff and my fellow members, I have had the most exciting experience at the Summer Summit!
